High School of the Dead 0114

Zombies are everywhere. You can find them in games (Biohazard/Resident Evil), films (Resident Evil?), comics (Resident Evil?!) … hell, I’m even prepared to read about them in the newspaper! Fortunately, that hasn’t happened yet (though some of the so called celebrities do resemble them). If we think about zombies, most of us have those things in mind: undead, brainless, disoriented, slow, stinking and groaning. High School of the Dead sticks to this too. Time to get started …

No, this is not a romance anime. It's actually the beginning of H.O.T.D.

Everything starts with the protagonist, Takashi Komuro, reflecting the events that lead to the end of the world as we know it. His words are without a doubt and absolute. And I’m wondering myself whether he believes that his death is a given or not. As this isn’t Hollywood (for those who still believe in happy endings and fairy tales: go, watch School Days) I do not really know but considering that some major revelations have been made already it’s possible that we’ll get to see a good ending. But how did it all start and why is this anime called High School of the Dead? Well …

Come on! Who'd fall for that?!

Highschool of the Dead is set in the present day, beginning as the world is struck by a deadly pandemic that turns humans into zombies, euphemistically referred to by the main characters as “them”. The story follows Takashi Komuro, a Japanese student at Fujimi High School who survived the initial outbreak along with several of his classmates and the school nurse. It happens suddenly: Takashi hangs out alone to pass the time thinking about Rei Miyamoto, his childhood friend who promised to marry him back then. But apparently she’s dating his best friend Hisashi. In the meantime some weird guy is running against the closed entrance gates, arms raised and spacing out. As a result to the noise four teachers come and try to persuade the man to just leave. But dumb as they are they get bitten and thus starting to bite others.

The PE teacher, taking a nap of course.
