Guess very few of you heard of the name of the series. That’s not a big surprise. The first time that I heard of this novel was at AkibaBlog. Would like to put it as a dream of every novelists who are not famous enough to make their first publication. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (魔法科高校の劣等生) is firstly a web novel written by Tsutomu Sato (佐島勤) on his blog and Syosetu. Later, the novel had its 40 million page views and was backed by Dengeki Bunko (電撃文庫) for publication of its first volume on July 8 this year. Illustrated by Kana Ishida (石田 加奈), the novel turned out to be received hot welcome and some readers mention it very interesting a novel.
Let’s just translate a bit more toward English. The title of the novel is about Magic and high school students while the magic seems to have something to do with science. We may put it as “Underperforming Student in Magic High School” or something. The underperforming student, of course, will be our male protagonist Tatsuya Shiba (司波達也) and traditionally, we should have the other side of the coin, and yes, the top student Miyuki Shiba (司波深雪) who “happens” to be the younger sister of our male protagonist.
So the relationship is quite clear, probably a bit Oreimo style to fans. However, it’s totally the contrary since our younger sister this time has a strong feeling towards her elder brother. The story is about their daily life around the campus. Even though some fans do have positive comments on the series, some of them do mention how boring the series is and you can predict the coming plot without any problems. Also, as a web novel, the author seems to be a bit “underperforming” in his writing skill. Well, different people have different ideas, and we stay objective and respect all of them.
The series reminds me of Infinite Stratos. Even though Harem is a must element of contemporary Anime trend, we would definitely want the male protagonist to be different from the typical ones. Luckily, our male protagonist this time seems to have a much better personality than the one in Infinite Startos. And from the title of the series, the word “underperforming” describes our male protagonist. But do you really think so? Do you really think that our male protagonist has no other abilities other than attracts females? Nobody will think so, thus the plot is easy to tell. It also reminds me of Chrome Shelled Regios (鋼殻のレギオス) where our male protagonist Layfon shows how capable he is after few episodes.
Recently there are some rumors that the series will be made Anime. The novel ranked top in July in certain area in Tokyo. Also you can see that Boku no Imouto wa Kanji ga Yomeru (僕の妹は漢字が読める) ranked at top five. So, big reasons that Anime company won’t miss the chance. Stay tuned and we will bring more updates on the rumor.
