The next thing on my schedule is the community feature whose layout and style are basically done. However, there are still few things to do before the release. Hope to finish the final test in this month or next. At this point, you may want to check out the new look of the forum instead.

What’s New?

There are actually lots of changes that I made compared with the previous theme. Some most obvious points listed below.

Rewriting the Codes

I basically rewrote all the codes even though you don’t see a big change in the overall layout. The codes are much more clean and it’s now a HTML5 structure. So, to make the most out of the new theme, you may want to upgrade your browser to the latest version and of course, old browsers are also well supported except IE6. To test whether your browser support the latest HTML5, simply move your cursor to the text “THEAKIBA” on the left hand side of the top menu bar. If you see the text effect, you are totally fine.

Not Responsive, Yet

It is always a problem for me to make the site more compatible to different browsers, resolutions and even different devices. With the help of CSS3 Media Queries, I can easily add those features and make only one theme that will meet all the requirements and we call this technique Responsive Design. However, after all kinds of experiments and redesign, I found responsive design is probably not something I need and instead, I create a really wide layout without any ability to auto adjust to different resolution. And to make the site compatible to different devices, I probably will create mobile optimized theme instead.

Fixed Wide Layout

The previous theme had two kinds of layout which will auto adjust according to your screen resolution, either 980 px or 1190 px wide. As I found out more and more people are using wide screen and finally decided to drop the support of regular screen resolution like 1024 x 768 px (which takes up less than 5% of our visitors). With a fixed and wide sidebar, I can add all kinds of useful stuffs to enrich the blog and help readers find more valuable information.

New Navigation Toolbar

I finally made one navigation menu which I am quite satisfy with. It’s compact and has all kinds of useful links which will definitely help you to locate any specific pages on the blog. If you cannot find what you need, go to the toolbar or simply look it up using the search form. It is also my favorite part of the new theme.

hNews and Readability

I’ve taken the most needed part into consideration: the readability of the posts. Because that’s what a website like TheAkiba is all about. After doing some researches on all kinds of websites, newspapers and magazines, I finally come up with this single post view. If you use services like Readability, you will get the most out of this post view and the hNews behind.

Foundation and Reverie

Last but not least, of course, as I said before, the new theme is built on Reverie, a WordPress framework that I created for my WordPress project ThemeFortress. If you are a WordPress lover, you may want to check out my post for the project.

As you can see from the graphic, the traffic is increasing steadily and we currently have a stable 1,500 unique visits per day. Not a big number but I do feel that we met most of the goal.

Achievements, Milestones and Events

Launch of Facebook Fan Page: During January 2011, I updated the Facebook fan page to make more use to the social media giant to help promote the site. Not a very huge impact but I did received lots of greetings from all the social friends. We grow and have around 950 fans during the year.

TheAkiba V5 Launched: In early March 2011, the fifth version of TheAkiba was launched. Note a big change from the previous theme, I did managed to tweak it all along the way. TheAkiba is still in its fifth version and as you might have already known, I am working on the new theme, as well as a community for the site. Stay tuned and will bring up the new theme in January or February.

Akiba Newsletter: Akiba Newsletter is a project to help our readers to get updated with Anime news and reviews, Japanese pop culture and so forth. The newsletter will be sent to your mailbox every weekend so you can get a weekly recap of what happened during the week or month. We currently have around 410 subscribers since the launch in September. If you haven’t tried it out, subscribe now.

Akiba Network: Akiba Network is another project that I created to showcase selected articles from the quality online publications with main focus on Anime, Manga, Games, Figures and Japanese Pop Culture. The project is currently under revamp, but will be depended on how things turned out to be.

Series Card: Series Card is a simple card style database that displayed at the end of each posts showing you useful information about the related Anime in the posts. It’s a quick way to help our readers to get more insights into the series we are talking about. Also, I built a new Series Database on the top of Series Card so our readers can click and find more details about the series.

Forum: The forum is a placeholder before the release of the community. Get in and have fun.

ThemeFortress: ThemeFortress is a WordPress related blog that focuses on bringing you tips about theme design and develop. On ThemeFortress, you will learn about basic settings and developing of your own WordPress blog. From installing a simple copy, setting up your local testing environment, to design and code your own theme, super charge and fortify your theme with powerful framework and proper plugins. It’s something I enjoy doing and separated from TheAkiba.

Japaneta: Japaneta is another separate project from TheAkiba.

Considered the fact that I launched too many projects during the year, will definitely slow down and polish them in the upcoming years.

What about 2012?

What’s the plan for 2012? I haven’t thought too much about it. It will be definitely great to have a full agenda in my to-do list, but let’s just take a breath and think before the leap. Probably stabilizing the site will be main goal in 2012, but so far, I don’t know, no specific requirements should be met, right? Hope all of you had a great year, and see you in 2012.

This post A Brief Summary of 2011 was written originally at TheAkiba.

During November, I started two different projects. One is ThemeFortress, a WordPress theme focus blog where I released my first WordPress theme framework Reverie. ThemeFortress is doing pretty well and was mentioned by lots of well-known blogs of the industry, yes, even Smashing Magazine, causing a peak to the traffic which was even higher than TheAkiba. If you are a blogger and want to design your own theme, you may want to follow me on ThemeFortress. Another project is pretty new: Japaneta. Japaneta is a Twitter like microblogging platform focus on Japanese culture and subculture. Users are able to input short messages, pics and videos very quickly. The site is currently under beta test and more changes will coming alone.

Ask the Commenters: Why do You Watch K-ON?

We had an very interesting discussion on the topic that why people are watching K-ON! According to research of ASCII, the series received well to the general public, especially young women who don’t watch Anime frequently. The research reveals that 37% of K-ON! fans are women while only 10% of the audience are female for Strike Witches 2.

Oda Nobuna no Yabou TV Anime Adaptation Confirmed

According to the official Twitter of GA Bunko, light novel series Oda Nobuna no Yabou was green-lit for TV Anime production. Written and illustrated by Mikage Kasuga and Miyama-Zero respectively, Oda Nobuna no Yabou is again a story about a time travel boy who accidentally jump into a Sengoku period where all the Samurai lords are cute girls. The pattern of the series seems a bit familiar and if you recall, we have another quite similar setting in Sengoku Otome ~Momoiro Paradox~, where the protagonist is female instead.

Fate/Apocrypha: New Project of TYPE-MOON

Source reveals that in the upcoming 7th volume of TYPE-MOON ACE, a new project named Fate/Apocrypha will be announced on December 15. As you might not have learned, according to ANN, Fate/Apocrypha was firstly revealed as an online game set during the story’s Holy Grail War but failed to be released. The latest volume of the magazine will also include a demo of the upcoming Mahoutsukai no Yoru (well, I think it has been delayed for quite a while since 2009) and a mascot figure.

Madoka Magica Three Movies Announced

According to the December issue of Monthly Newtype, TV Anime series Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica was announcing on Thursday that movies of the series will be produced. According to Atsuhiro Iwakami, the producer of the series, there will be altogether three movies among which two movies will be a compilation of the TV series, while one will be an brand new story.

News Leak! Kore wa Zombie Desu ka Second Season to be Aired Next Spring

According to the accidentally leaked news, TV Anime Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? will announce its second season to be aired next Spring, that is April 2012. Starting from January 2012, the first season of the TV Anime will be aired again. As for the OVA that we mentioned before, will be bundled with 10th volume of the light novel as episode 0 of the second season. The original novel has already sold over 2,500,000 volumes, and the 10th volume will be released in April 2012.

Shaman King Sequel Manga Flowers Coming April 2012

According to the 5th volume of Jump Kai magazine, a sequel Manga of Shaman King series, Shaman King -Flowers-, will be serialized in April 2012. Hana Asakura, the protagonist of the new series, appears to be the son of Yoh Asakura (you should be able to tell who Hana’s mother is), the protagonist of the orignal Manga which never ended. So far we don’t have many clues on what the main story will be, nor whether Hao, the big boss of the Manga was defeated, or will still be the boss of the new Manga.

Sora no Otoshimono Movie BD to be Released in February 2012

Finally we have the confirmed information about when the highly expected movie of TV Anime series Sora no Otoshimono. According to the official website announcement, the BD and DVD will be released on February 24, 2012. The Blu-ray version is around 9,000 JPY, that is 116 USD. If you have an international Credit card, you can start to pre-order it on Amazon Japan, probably the only place you can order for it now. Apart from the BD/DVD itself, several interesting goods that are totally not safe to mention here will also be included in the package.

Light Novel Date A Live Anime Adaptation Confirmed

According to Fujimi Fantasia Bunko, Japanese light novel Date A Live was green-lit for Anime adaptation. According to the publisher themselves, they never thought of making the Anime adaptation so quick for the series. Written by Koshi Tachibana and illustrated by Tsunako, the first volume of the novel was just released in March. You can check out the official website of the novel for more PV and related stuffs.

Series Card Reloaded, Introducing Series Database

Continued by Series Card, I made this new section of the site which I called it Series Database, just to expand the Series Card for future use. You can take the Anime Series Database as an advanced version of Series Card. It expands the categories and gives you information that you are not able to see on Series Card.

AKB0048 Anime Official Website Launched

The official website of upcoming Anime series of idol group AKB48 was launched a day after Thanksgiving. With a name of AKB0048, the series probably gives you a feeling of some GUNDAM Anime, and it is true that the sereis will be directed by Kawamori Shouji who is also the director behind Macross Frontier. You can already smell the Mecha. The audition for the Anime will consist of 9 winners from among the 200 members of AKB48 and its sister groups SKE48, NMB48, and HKT48 while the final audition will take 30 contestants and pick the final winners on December 13 in Tokyo.

The reason I start this platform is quite simple: to speed up the sharing of news and resources. Sometimes it is a bit difficult to keep our readers updated, especially for all those news and events happening around our niche, due to the lack of hands and the time that we need to write a post and compile it before publishing. The process sometimes can be difficult and time-consuming, and at the end of the day, we might be able only to come up with one post, with limited time spend on blogging. I thought about user submitted contents, but it also needs further editing and at the same time the news and information have already blown the industry away. Thus I came up with a solution, why not letting our readers share these resources themselves? It’s quite easy, when you find something interesting about Japanese pop culture, write a few lines and attach an image to it. It only takes a minute to do so and you don’t have a feeling of messing up things as you do while writing a blog post.

What is behind Japaneta?

If you are already using services like Identi.ca, then you should be very familiar with Japaneta. In order to solve the second problem, I made this new section of the site which I called it Series Database (well, it worths a name I think), just to expand the Series Card for future use. You can take the Anime Series Database as an advanced version of Series Card. It expands the categories and gives you information that you are not able to see on Series Card (Truly, you should not expect too much information on a small card, well, probably a Lightbox or something could help.).

In a Series Database view (You can access to it by clicking on the title of the Series Card.), take Guilty Crown for example (Did I mention I am a big fan of Ayase?), you will see a huge image/slide along with the basic information of the series. Not a very special tune but I just want to make it a little bit nice looking. Apart from what you have already seen on Series Card, scroll down a bit to see more information including user reviews, release date, producers and more are coming. The complete genre list is on the left side where you can easily navigate through.

Friends may complain that the layout will too wide in this case. Well, take a look at the page in your browser carefully. See, the layout fits well to your browser resolution. Now, resize your browser, or even view it on your iPhone, iPad. Again, the layout adjusts to fit nicely for your screen. This is a new trend of the future theme development which we refer to as Responsive design. With the help of Media Queries of CSS3, designers can easily write different styles for different browsers, resolutions and devices. To implement these nice trick, I use Reverie Framework, a HTML5 WordPress framework that I created to help myself for future theme development. I have already released the framework on my blog ThemeFortress. You can check out my post for the detail of this framework.

The information written both on the Series Card and Series Database are all from the web, either Wikipedia, MAL, ANN or anywhere on the web. The Series Database is still under development. If you find any bugs, problems or have some awesome ideas (like what do you think I should add to the Series Database), don’t hesitate to contact me, either in the forum or comment below.

Where is the New TheAkiba?

The forum we opened a while ago, together with Series Database are part of the future version of TheAkiba. I basically just try to roll these things out one by one, accepting feedbacks and A/B testing them along before releasing the new theme. The upcoming new design of TheAkiba will be similar to the forum and Series Database. And in fact, I’ve also redesigned the Series Card itself, but to implement to the current theme seems to be too much work, thus I will only release the new design when the new theme of TheAkiba is online. These are all built on Reverie Framework, and of course, with heavy customization.

Toaru Majutsu no Index Movie Announced

According to the announcement on the official website of TV Anime series Toaru Majutsu no Index, the movie of the series is confirmed and more details will be revealed in the upcoming issue of Dengeki Bunko Magazine on October 11. It appears that suddenly all the producers gain extra funding from the government and ready to pour it into a more profitable industry. If you heard of the news of Blood-C which gain support from the Japanese government, you probably understand what I mean.

Quick Look: DOG DAYS 2nd Season Announced

According to the official Twitter of HMV Anime, the 2nd season of TV Anime series DOG DAYS has been announced. It is totally not a surprise and if you take a look at the sale and the shining staff list, you probably would be convinced. The causal style of the series and cute girls of the series are widely accepted by fans even though in a name of War that actually fan-serviced a lot of people.

10,000 Free Tickets to Japan

Interesting piece of news from Danny Choo that the Japanese government is going to invit 10,000 foreigners to Japan in 2012 and pay for their travel. Certainly it is some kind of tourism and economy recover policy. The number of foreign visitors since earthquake and nuclear accident has dropped by a huge amount. The reason that we mention this news is it appears that Danny works with some Japanese government departments and he can more or less convince them to choose you first. Light Novel Kokoro Connect Anime Adaptation Announced

If you “happened” to find that the thumbnail of this post reminds you of K-ON!, you get totally wrong. It is about light novel series Kokoro Connect which was green-lit for Anime. One of the highlight is that the illustration of the novel has a extremely similar character design which took me a while to identify. That is because the illustrator (Horiguchi Yukiko) of the light novel happened to be the same person as the character designer of Anime K-ON!.

Amagami SS Second Season to be Aired this Winter

According to the official website of TV Anime Amagami SS, the second season of the series titled Amagami SS+ plus will be aired this Winter since January 2012. The total number of episodes will be around 12 and it will have a similar style too. Each heroine has her own arc of 2 episodes telling story happens after the first season. Noted that we have the male protagonist in Haruka Morishima arc where talks about story after their marriage, so, and we also have the couple staying in the Onsen together in Ai Nanasaki arc. So, what to expect?

Hayate no Gotoku New Anime Adaptation Confirmed

According the late 30th volume of the Manga series of Hayate no Gotoku which released on October 18, a new Anime adaptation is confirmed. Well, this topic is a bit old since we have talked about it for a while. You should not be surprise since back in April, the author of the series Kenjiro Hata has mentioned on his Twitter that there would be a third season after the movie this Summer. So, it will be a third season, if you trust the author.

First Impression: Mirai Nikki

This new anime adaptation kicks off with a good start. Mirai Nikki displayed high content quality along with stunning graphics. This anime is very related to the real world and would make fans think “What if we actually had a real Future Diary and can know what the future awaits?”. Adapted from a recently ended Manga series of the same title, it promises the ability to shatter the record of popularity of its manga series. I’m hopeful for the future of the series and can’t wait for the surprises to come. Read more.

Hayate no Gotoku New Anime Announced; Should be Third Season

According the late 30th volume of the Manga series of Hayate no Gotoku (ハヤテのごとく！) which released on October 18, a new Anime adaptation is confirmed. Well, this topic is a bit old since we have talked about it for a while. Even though the whole web is rumoring whether it will be a third season or a new OVA. You should not be surprise since back in April, the author of the series Kenjiro Hata (畑 健二郎) has mentioned on his Twitter that there would be a third season after the movie this Summer. So, it will be a third season, if you trust the author. Read more.

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Another Interesting Series in Winter

According to the official website of Square Enix’s GanGan Online (ガンガンONLINE), Manga series Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou was green-lit for TV Anime and will be aired this Winter, January 2012. Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou is a web Manga series written by Yasunobu Yamauchi (山内 泰延), revolving around the interesting daily life of three high school boys. Tired of all those Moe and loads of cute high school girls, try this one out. It appears to be a very interesting series. Also we have another series about high school male students this season. With a title of Kimi to Boku (君と僕。), it is one of the finest series that I follow this Fall. Read more.

What’s New?

The most interesting thing of theme is, as I said above, the upgrade to the latest version of WordPress. You have to use a 3.0+ version in order to use the theme and I will explain the reasons and new features below.

• The first new feature is Post Thumbnail. If you tried out the previous version of my theme, you will know at that time (3 years ago), in order to show the thumbnail of the post, you have to either use the Custom Field, or TimThumb and I choose the former. And with the update of WordPress 2.9, a new feature Post Thumbnail is added and users can now easily define their own thumbnails. Also with this new feature, theme designer can customize the size of the image and show them accordingly.
• The second new feature is Custom Menu, which was introduced back in 3.0. Previously, users have to hack their theme (or the theme designer provides the option panel for the users) to change the menu, with the update of WordPress 3.0, this feature was shipped. After activating the theme, go to Appearance and choose Menus, you will be able to edit the menu yourself. Please note, I did not include sub menu for this version.
• Last but also the most exciting one is, we have an Option Panel, which means you can do everything within the back end of WordPress without going to the code. I use the Setting API method to create a simple theme option page where you can enter all the necessary information, including the featured category, custom CSS, your ads and so forth. The rest is automatically done for you. This is really an interesting feature, think I will integrate it with my current theme.

That best part of bbPress is, I can easily embed a specific forum and topic in a blog post. This is an amazing feature and you can see the example below. Registered users (you can use the login form on the sidebar to register or login) can use the forum reply form to reply directly to the forum thread without leaving the blog post. Also we can easily bring up heat topics to all our readers who happened to miss the popular discussion. This is really amazing.

More features are coming step by step, towards a brand new community, and probably a brand new theme and layout. If you are interested in the blog and the forum, why not take a look at it and leave a message for us?

YoU	Hello @rik8480 you are so welcomed! We use Gravatar for the avatar/profile image. You get register an account with your Email and change your avatar across the web! Of course you will be able to upload profile image after the community launch this Winter I am working on it!
